Kathi & Gary Heapy

Gary and Kathi have been married for 16 ½ years and have 3 children, ages 3, 10 & 11 and 2 Boston Terriers aged 1 year. They have worked together in Gary's family’s carpet business for 17 years.

Gary was born in Ft. Walton Beach, attended Elliott Point Elem, Meigs Middle, and Choctawhatchee High Schools. He entered to the family business after graduation from Georgia Tech in 1986 with a degree in Management Science, which was Tech’s version of a business degree at the time.

Kathi, an Air Force brat, graduated from Indiana University in 1987 with a degree in Business, moved to Ft. Walton, met Gary and started working in the carpet business in 1988 after they became engaged.

Gary’s parents started the business in 1972. Hard work, risk-taking, sound fiscal management are what has sustained them and helped them grow over the years.

Gary became President of the company in 2000. He has taken over most of the management responsibilities for the stores. Kathi works as office manager, and handles most of the administrative details of the business.

He has been its President, Vice President, Treasurer, and member at large. He received the Chairman’s Award in 1994 for dedicated work on the Board of Managers.

Gary is a United States Swimming-Certified Official and volunteers at swim meets as a Starter and Stroke and Turn Judge. Kathi works at our home meets as the Clerk of Course and Scorer.

Gary and his father serve on the Advisory Council for the Stone Mountain National Franchise organization, providing valuable insight and input into the direction of the company.

For many years, our company was a beta-tester for RFMS (Resource and Financial Management Systems) as they continued develop and update their comprehensive software package for managing a company. We have used RFMS since its inception in 1987 and contribute a measure of our business success to being computerized with such an effective tool.

Gary and Kathi recently helped as assistant coaches for the Meigs Middle School Swim Team. They met 18 years ago while volunteering as assistant coaches for the Choctawhatchee High Swim Team.

Gary and Kathi are members of St. Mary’s Church, Kathi is a Lector, and kids participate in the Religious Education Program. Both volunteer at Shalimar Elementary School, Gary as a Sunshine Math instructor, and Kathi as a story time reader.

Our business, Stone Mountain Carpet Mill Outlet employs ten people between the two stores in Ft. Walton and Crestview. We are a frequent supplier of flooring for the Okaloosa County School Board, and also work with several other commercial concerns, such as the Eglin Federal Credit Union, Okaloosa County, and, most recently, the new location of the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society, where a sizeable amount of the project was donated.

In addition to the commercial work, we have a strong base of retail customers, many of whom are loyal and return to us and refer us to others frequently. We strive to provide a broad range of products at the most competitive prices in the area. We purchase materials by the truckload and import tile from Europe by the container in order to achieve greater savings and have the material immediately available for our customers.

In 2003, Kathi and Gary started their own venture, KnG Properties, LLC, which owns two office complexes on Beal Parkway and leases to 12 tenants. Storage space in one of the units is donated to ABWA and the Piranha Swim Team for their equipment and materials.

We support local groups such as Relay for Life, YMCA, School groups, Shalimar Elementary PTO, Junior League, MDA, Rotary Club, Kiwanis, Homebuilders Association, Chamber of Commerce, Cub Scouts, Piranha Swim Team and ABWA with contributions of money, materials, and even storage space. Stone Mountain has supported the ABWA Poker Run with $500 contributions for the past several years. In 1991, we donated the installation of carpet (which was donated by DuPont) for the Ronald McDonald House in Pensacola. We have sponsored PASA soccer teams and YMCA t-ball teams for several years.

Gary and Kathi are proud to be carrying on the family business as it grows and becomes more and more profitable. They believe that participation in their community is crucial to success, both for their business, as well as their family. They are strong believers that the success of our childrens’ schools and recreational activities depends in part upon the participation and contributions of parents and volunteers, and they back that belief up with their own participation and support of activities at their children’s schools as well as others.

Although the flooring business itself has traditionally been male-dominated, Kathi and her mother-in-law, Bette Heapy have grown strong in the business. Gary supports their growth and truly sees no barriers for women in business. Many of the sales representatives, especially advertising, that Gary deals with are women and all will say that he deals with them in a friendly, respectful manner as an equal.

Gary and Kathi Heapy are true family-oriented business people. They are dedicated to their family and the community in which they live and intend to raise their family. They have roots here and intend to stay. Gary was born in Ft. Walton Beach, and Kathi, an Air Force Brat, has finally found a home. They enjoy supporting the businesses of friends and neighbors as much as possible.

Several ABWA members are business associates of Kathi and Gary’s: Marnie Tate, Kimii Felder, Jeanne Rief, Sheila Scott, Kathy Browe, Angela McCormick, Lisa Coker, Vickie Edge, Sally Johnson. Additionally, it has been our pleasure to provide floorcovering services for several chapter members over the years.
